looking back to move forward.
Courtney Jones
we have always been told to look forward in life- to keep your eyes on the future and not the past. well today i have a story about how looking directly back helped me make the next step forward.
this story takes us back a few years to when i was finishing up my degree in art + design at grand valley state university here in grand rapids, michigan. i- as most recent graduates do-struggled to find a foothold to start the climb of what is real life. i was working multiple part-time jobs, but that just didn’t cut it in the world we live in today. i found myself living in my warehouse studio where i simply did what i knew how to do- i made things. i had no idea this was the start of our brand here at sable.
i feel like this situation is nothing new to creative professionals- most artists have experienced living in their studio in order to keep their dreams alive- holding onto their work as their most vital asset. this requires a large amount of of innovation and grit, but in the end is worth the effort.
with that in my history, when we started looking for a studio for our candle production i went straight back to the place it started. i contacted the building i used to rent from to see if they had space available… and sure enough they did! i visited a few studios and we found the perfect space to complete our expansion. this move will not only streamline production, but it will also give us more room for stocking product and shipping orders faster.
this move is so much more than us expanding our brand- we are fighting the idea of “starving artists” and doing our part in the #makersmovement. our story is one of many in the creative world, one voice in the millions of people bringing their trade to you- let’s listen to them and let’s support them, because without doing that everyone’s dreams will stay in the future instead of becoming reality.
so let’s build our dreams by looking back and moving forward. thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey- a journey that still has many more chapters to come. this move is helping our story come “full circle” in it’s own- so stay tuned for what comes next!
