how to clean out your candle container

Courtney Jones

because we encourage you all you reuse or refill your candle, we get asked about the best way to clean out candle containers all the time! so here are a few of our tips + tricks to help you quickly and easily clean out your used candle vessels.

here is how we do it it our studio in two easy steps:

  1. use a blunt utensil (we use a spoon) to gently break apart the small amount of wax on the bottom of your candle. take care to not hit the sides too hard.

  2. dump pieces in the trash + wipe out with paper towel!

a few more things to remember during this process is that there will ALWAYS be about 1/4”- 1/2” of wax on the bottom of your candle- this is a safety precaution to make sure the flame doesn’t reach the very bottom of your container. you will see a metal wick tab that extinguishes the flame once your candle burns down- this means your candle is gone.

there are some precautions you should take with your candle:

  1. avoid damage to the container when buying, transporting and storing (dropping, clanking against other items, etc.) this could cause small cracks that will expand when heat is applied (ie when you light your candle).

  2. avoid storing your candles in extreme hot or cold temperatures (ie. outside in the car, etc). this can impact how many times you will be able to refill this container as a candle.

  3. avoid using the freezer to remove your wax: this is a trendy way that many people have found to get the last bit of wax out of their container, but it can cause some issues if you plan to refill that candle. if a container with the materials like terrazzo, ceramic, etc go from hot to cold mutliple times, it could cause cracking.

once you sucessfully clean out you can use for so many things- check out our blog post about all the creative things you could come up with!

you can also refill your candle instead of repurposing- check out our refill page to learn more!

gifts for candle lovers

Courtney Jones

need a gift for that person who already has ALL the candles?! check out some of our candle accessories below to find the perfect “match” to an already amazing candle collection…

soy wax frosting: why is my candle top changing?

Courtney Jones

tis the sesason to discuss frosting… no, we are not discussing sugary goodness, but we are talking about a natural process that happens to soy wax!

have you ever noticed that the top of your soy candle may get “frosty” if you keep it a long time without burning? Have you ever wondered if this is normal?

well it is! when the glossy top starts to turn to a more opaque finish, it’s called frosting. this is a natural characteristic of soy wax, and it is one way that you can tell that the candle is made with pure, all natural soy wax.

when the wax arrives to our studio, it comes in opaque white flakes- these are melted down and poured into your candle. overtime, frosting is simply the wax returning to it’s natural opaque state. frosting does not affect the way candles burn or impact the scent throw, so even if you see this on a candle you have kept for a while, go ahead and light it up!

so next time you take a look at your candle and notice little imperfections, let it remind you it was made by humans with the best all natural ingredients!

What is Soy Wax?

Courtney Jones

Have you ever wondered how soy wax is made? This is a question we get quite often, so we thought we would share a bit about how our wax is made…

Soy wax is a vegetable wax made from the oil of soybeans- a bean belonging to the legume family. The vast majority of the beans used to make soy wax is grown right here in the USA! These plants are primarily grown in the midwest states like Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana.

Soybeans are usually harvested in the late fall, during the months of October and November. After harvesting, the beans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. The hydrogenation process converts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated. This process dramatically alters the melting point of the oil, making it a solid at room temperature. The leftover bean husks are commonly used as animal feed.

The Benefits of Soy Wax:

The most common attribute of soy wax is that is makes a natural candle that burns slowly and cleanly- making it a better choice for your home environment, but did you know they are also better for OUR environment?

Soy's greatest advantage is that it is completely renewable. While the global reserves of oil shrink and paraffin prices increase, the only limit to the soy supply is how much we choose to grow. The soy that we use in our candle making process was likely in the ground less than a year ago, and chances are that same field is growing more soy for the candles to be made in the future.

So when you shop with us, you can know that our products are sustainable, eco-friendly, renewable, and American grown.

how to layer scents in seasonal transitions

Courtney Jones

transitioning into a new season is the perfect time to learn how to layer scents in your home! during times of change, you often still have different “types” of candles floating around… maybe some brighter citrusy candles are lingering from summer, but you are shifting into darker spiced candles for fall. this can cause some scent clashing, so you want to make sure you are pairing your candles well with each other around your house!

we are going to give some examples with a few of our common scents. in the summer two of our bestselling scents are fern + rain and juniper + rose. these candles are light, airy and floral… hard to pair with certain fall candles.

if you are burning fern + rain, we would suggest to move towards a fall candle that is more woodsy instead of something spiced- maybe a darker rustic candle like oak + moss or black spruce.

if you are burning juniper + rose, go with a more fruity sweet scent, like cranberry + spice.

in addition to being aware of the scents you are mixing, you can also be mindful of where you place the candles physically in your home- think about how your house flows, and how scents in adjacent rooms may intermingle.

An example of this is if you are burning your juniper + rose in one room, add the cranberry to the next, then you could play with shifting to the beloved harvest moon in the following room. the cranberry + spice becomes a transition room that connects the two scent spaces!

these tips are to help transition from our summer bestsellers, but don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions about your candle scents! one of our expert candle makers would be happy to help you create your custom home space…

cozy home series: krista pischner-coon

Courtney Jones

Over the past year, we all have been somewhat forced to realize how much our homes influence our lives. Home has become a space not only to sleep and eat, but a place of rest, recovery, safety, and sanctuary. We have been pushed to actually spend time in our homes, to actually LIVE in our homes in a way we never have been before.

Because of this, candles have become a large part in building these personal sanctuaries. Olfactory senses play a massive role in how your brain perceives space- smell can trigger both positive and negative emotions, which is why fragrance plays such a vital role in making your home.

With so much time spent at home in the past year, we wanted to take a closer look at our customers homes and how our candles have impacted their lives! Our first interview was with Krista Pischner-Coon:

How has your idea of “home” changed over the past year?

“Home has always been a place I look forward to going to after work. But over the last year, with so much more time at home, I never really want to leave my home. All of my extra time spent at home has inspired and motivated me to work on home improvement projects, cleaning and organizing, etc. as well as making my home art studio feel a little bit more like a studio instead of just a place to store my art projects. And over the last year, my home and my art studio have offered me a safe and comforting space to reflect and recover through the really tough year we had.”

My favorite sable scent is fern + rain. It reminds me of my childhood, growing up up north at my parents’ country home, frolicking with my siblings through fields of wildflowers and building forts in the woods surrounded by big beautiful green ferns.

What is your favorite room in your home? Why?

“My favorite room in my home is my living room. My living room is quite large and has a lot of different sitting options, coffee table books and my favorite novels, art on the walls and lots and lots of candles! It’s my favorite room to curl up on the couch with a good book, cup of coffee and a candle lit next to me. It’s also my favorite room in the house when we host friends and family. We can pretty much all find a place to sit and when the room is filled with our favorite people, it feels really intimate and cozy.”

How do you make that room your “sanctuary”?

“My living room is filled with all of my favorite things- photos of my husband and I from our wedding day, photos with my sisters and my family, art by local artists and ourselves on the walls, dried lavender and eucalyptus, snake plants, our favorite coffee table books and novels, puzzles, our record player, cat toys (it is also our cat’s favorite room haha!) cozy handmade blankets and of course a variety of candles, depending on our mood or the time of year.”

I have a lot of candle fragrances in my home that make me feel calm, or that coordinate with the seasons, or that remind me of someone or an experience.

How does fragrance play a role in your home? Do you have certain candle scents that you light in certain rooms? Why?

“Fragrance is a huge part of my home. When I come back to my home after being away for a long weekend or a week, I immediately smell my “home fragrance” and am happy to be home. My home smells like a mixture of all the scented candles we have about but also “old country farmhouse”. Aside from my parents home fragrance, my house is the only place I have ever lived in that actually smells like home to me. I have a lot of candle fragrances in my home that make me feel calm, or that coordinate with the seasons, or that remind me of someone or an experience. I do like certain candle scents in certain rooms- I love green tea + lemongrass in the kitchen because it’s fresh and makes me think of gardening. I love lavender + chamomile in the bathroom because it’s so calming. I like tobacco + vanilla, pine + scotch or fern + rain in the living room or dining room, because this is the largest space in my house and these scents fill large rooms well plus they’re super cozy and make me feel refreshed.”

What is your favorite sable scent? Why?

“My favorite sable scent is fern + rain. It reminds me of my childhood, growing up up north at my parents' country home, frolicking with my siblings through fields of wildflowers and building forts in the woods surrounded by big beautiful green ferns. But I love all of the sable scents, depending on the season, on my mood, etc. Lavender + chamomile is perfect when I am overwhelmed and I need a simple reminder to calm down, tobacco + vanilla is great when my husband and I are enjoying a cozy night in, and green tea + lemongrass is my favorite kitchen candle, especially in the summer- it’s so fresh!”

I have so many memories that tie back into smell or certain scents. What really sticks out to me in the last year are memories associated with the lavender + chamomile candle.

Do you have any memories that tie back into smell, or certain scents?

“I have so many memories that tie back into smell or certain scents. What really sticks out to me in the last year are memories associated with the lavender + chamomile candle. Whenever I burn that candle in my home, I think of 2 things in the last year. I think of when I was gifted the candle when my grandmother passed away. It was in the beginning of the pandemic, and we couldn’t get together as a family to grieve. My dear friend (Courtney!) gifted me the lavender + chamomile candle and I burned it all in one day, while reading, relaxing on the couch with a face mask on and looking through my favorite photos with my grandmother. I also think of when I visited a beautiful northern Michigan lavender farm with my sisters last summer. I was laid off from my job and spent many weeks up north with my family. My sisters and I decided to spend the morning at a lavender farm we had never been to before, and I will never forget the rolling hills of soft purple, white and gray lavender plants, all of the bumble bees busy pollinating and drinking a cold lavender lemonade.”
